A tribute to General Martin Delgado

Between the town hall and the football field of Santa Barbara, Iloilo is a public park. In the middle of the park is a statue of General Martin Delgado who led the revolutionary forces against the Spaniards and the Americans. He was made commanding general of the Visayas region by Emilio Aguinaldo and after the war became town mayor and one of Iloilo's most famous people.

General Delgado went to Ateneo too. And as I look at my alma mater's Sesquicentennial celebrations and its remembrance of its heroes, I noted that Delgado was missed out.

Ateneo has aside from the National Hero, Jose Rizal, also produced other prominent figures in our nation's struggle for independence: Antonio and Juan Luna and Gregorio Del Pilar.

We're not forgetting him here.
