Swoon to Love is Here to Stay by Tony
Bennett & Diana Krall with the Bill Charlap Trio.
This single LP of 12 songs finds
Tony and Diana celebrating the music of George and Ira Gershwin and the album
was released last September 26, on the occasion of the 120th
birthday of the former.
As a fan of Gershwin who passed
away at the relatively young age of 38, his music along with his brother Ira
has been enduring. They remain poignant and beautiful. And even today, 80 years
after he shifted this mortal coil, these interpretations by Tony and Diana tug
at your heartstrings and leave you with a yearning for a bygone age and the
hope and good it inspired.
Another treat is how the duo are
backed up by the Grammy Award-nominated Bill Charlap Trio (with Peter Washington
on bass and Kenny Washington on drums).
The music is delectable and I
love the harmony between Bennett and Krall. I had some trepidation about this
album because I know that Bennett is in his 90s, but his voice, as we have
heard for so long, ages like wine. And I figure this is something you should
treasure because he is getting in on the years. So, it’s achingly beautiful.
Along with Krall’s gentle inflections, it’s perfect.
Hope there is a second volume (in
the manner that Frank Sinatra recorded a second album of duets).
